Pharmacy Chain Prescription Error

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating pharmacy chains such as CVS Health and Walgreens Co. for endangerment of patient safety due to systemic understaffing and unreasonable performance metrics. Pharmacy chains dispense approximately 70% of prescriptions nationwide, with billions filled each year. Yet overworked pharmacists fear their chaotic work conditions expose patients to the possibility of “misfills” – a prescription error where the patient receives the wrong medication or an incorrect dose. In a recent survey of nearly 1,000 Missouri pharmacists, 60% of respondents reported either agreeing, or strongly agreeing, with the statement that they “feel pressured or intimidated to meet standards or metrics that may interfere with safe patient care.” Meanwhile, pharmacy chains continue to push patients towards automatic refill plans that patients often consider unnecessary, and pharmacists feel ill-equipped to reliably fulfill.
